Based on the UCI classification, the number of riders from each country who can participate in the Olympic road race in Paris on the one hand and the time trial on the other hand is determined.
Belgium finished in the top 5 for both men and women, giving our country 4 road race participants each time.
To determine the ranking, the eight riders who scored the best in 2023 are taken into account, and among the women, Belgium mainly owes its place in the top five to Lotte Kopecky, while among the men are Evenepoel, Van Aart, Philipsen and D. Fool, Pinot, Florian Vermeersch, Van Wilder and Thijsen are the relevant scorers.
Belgium is also allowed to have two riders start in the men’s time trial, but then they must also participate in the road race. After all, each country is allowed to field a maximum of 4 different contestants. For women, Belgium is entitled to one place in the time trial.
If we look at the competition, we see that the host nation France and Great Britain, like Belgium, are only allowed to field 4 competitors for both men and women. Only major countries like the Netherlands and Italy are allowed to start with three male riders.
