The national women's team that will travel to the USA next month is missing several strong players. Elise Mertens (WTA-28), Greet Minnen (WTA-81) and Yanina Wickmayer (WTA-89) will not be in attendance. Only world No. 3 Coco Goff was missing from the meeting at the Billie Jean King Cup.
“A meeting against the USA will be a tough challenge,” felt Wim Fizet. “The Americans could field a lot of great players, but unfortunately have to do without our regulars Creed Minnan and Yanina Wicklaire.”
“After a very busy 2023, with a good return to the top 100, they have had a tough start to 2024 and now want to focus fully on their own careers.”
No. 1 Elise Mertens was also absent. Fissette: “Elise has decided there is no room in her tournament schedule for the Billie Jean King Cup.”
Ysaline Bonaventure is on the mend and Alison van Uytvanck is working on her comeback.
“As a result, we head to the US with a young but talented team. This meet gives our players a chance to gain valuable experience and take the first steps in their Billie Jean King Cup career.”
“We realize that winning that victory is difficult, but in tennis and especially in the Billie Jean King Cup, everything is possible,” concludes the captain.
