Two years after his debut, Binyam Girmay returns to the Giro d'Italia this year. His team, Intermarché-Wanty, confirms that the Eritrean made the choice.
Jermain made his Giro debut in his best year in 2022, when he also won Gent-Wevelgem. He did this even more successfully: in the first ten stages, he reached the top ten six times. Jermain won stage 10 after a strong sprint against Mathieu van der Poel, but the Giro was finished shortly afterwards when he hit a champagne cork during the race. The podium party shot him in the eye.
“There is a feeling of 'unfinished business' left after his first outing, as Biniyam was then unable to defend his chances until the end of the Tour. He is very excited to get back to an important goal. This edition once again offers many opportunities for his type of rider,” he said. Performance Director Ike Visbeek: “I'm thinking about stages with a tough finish that can still lead to a sprint for the group.”
“That's why we decided to send Biniyam to the Giro. For his first big Tour of the season we hope he will continue the trend of the first months of the season. Biniyam has already been competitive in Australia and in the Spring Classics. In the lead-up to the Giro, he is following the same preparations as he did two years ago, With a training camp at his home in Asmara.
