Boerenbond also calls for further preventive measures and hopes that possible long-term financial compensation for affected livestock farmers will also be considered.
“We have been in continuous consultation with the FAVV, with Sciensano and with the governments of the responsible ministers Jo Bruns and David Clarinval for weeks,” says Levin Vancouelle of Boerenbond.
“For example, they have already responded to our request to quickly provide the necessary vaccines. Our sheep farmers in particular are already facing huge economic losses. The consequences are likely to be very serious. For this reason, we at Boerenbond are asking the government to intervene in the Rendak bills that our livestock farmers are receiving, and as soon as we have a better view of the total economic damage, we will also request compensation from the relevant ministers.”
Meanwhile, the farmers’ union is calling for more preventive measures to better provide for the future. “We need to think about new measures to avoid such outbreaks in the future,” concludes Vancoil. “For example, focusing more on vaccines that can combat different diseases, providing smoother trade and increasing access to preventive veterinary medicine.”
