Brazil’s parliamentary commission agrees to demand the conviction of President Bolsonaro | Abroad

Seven of the committee’s eleven senators voted in favor of the document, which calls for the indictment of 77 others, including several ministers, former ministers, businesses and three of Bolsonaro’s children.

“After six months of intense work, this parliamentary committee has collected evidence that the federal government has acted slowly in the fight against the coronavirus, deliberately exposing the population to mass infection,” the 1,200-page report reads. More than 600,000 Brazilians have died as a result of the epidemic.

The commission examined, among other things, the government’s responsibility for the acute shortage of oxygen that killed dozens in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus, and the president’s anti-lockdown rhetoric and denial of the seriousness of Covid-19. He described the virus as “the flu”. The government is also being reprimanded for delays in obtaining vaccines on suspicion of corruption. Bolsonaro himself has described the commission’s work as a “masquerade” and denies he mishandled the pandemic.
