Sophie de Vos (Devi), mayor of Odergem, wrote in a press release: “The special law on institutional reforms of 8 August 1980 is clear. Consultation between the regions concerned is a requirement before closing access roads.”
The decision to declare the Flemish region comes in the wake of “repeated attempts” by the municipality of Odergem to find alternative solutions to reduce inconvenience to citizens and surrounding municipalities.
“If Flanders is not prepared to take the necessary steps to reduce the nuisance and comply with legal requirements, we have the right to take legal action,” de Vos warns.
The Brussels and Walloon regions also want to suspend works
As a reminder, the Flemish Works and Traffic Agency has announced that from April 16 until the end of October 2024, the road from Oudergem/Herrmann Debroux to Waterloo at the Leonard junction will be closed. The Flemish Traffic Center previously warned that this could cause significant traffic disruption.
Oudergem wants Flanders to suspend work until there is a clear plan for the move. They also request consultation with the police, relevant municipalities, transport companies, regions and emergency services. The municipalities of Sint-Lambrechts-Woolwe and Sint-Peters-Woolwe also support this application.
Walloon Mobility Minister Philippe Henry (Ecolo) made the announcement on Thursday RTBF It is known that he also wants to suspend work, just like his colleague Minister Elke van den Brandt (Green) does for Brussels. She wants to postpone business for at least “one week.” She wants to use this week to develop a “good framework”: looking at consulting with the fire brigade and police and developing different alternatives, but also cooperating with Waze and Google to direct traffic in the right direction.
