Disaster movie Twisters is now in theaters. The sequel to Jan de Bont’s 1996 classic is packed with action, says Arjan Wells “Sparkling action scenes.”
But did you know that all the tornadoes in the movie are based on real disasters? The last tornado in the movie is particularly striking: it was inspired, among other things, by a disaster that claimed the lives of 76 people.

In his novel, director Lee Isaac Chung provides a fascinating image of that disaster: a movie theater with its screen completely destroyed, so that from the theater you can look down on the devastation in the street.
“When you see that picture, you can’t help but be alert to what hurricanes can do.” Chung said. “We’re talking about something very serious happening in the real world.”
