Through intelligent eye scanning, kidney diseases can be diagnosed early. This is clear from research conducted by the University of Edinburgh. Kidney disease is becoming increasingly common, partly due to the growing number of people with diabetes and obesity.
With the increasing number of patients suffering from kidney disease and diagnosis often delayed with current methods, this discovery offers hope for better early diagnosis of kidney disease and treatment of this growing healthcare challenge. The research was recently published in the journal Nature Communications.
Early detection
One of the major challenges of kidney disease is that it often goes unnoticed in its early stages. With current diagnostic methods, the disease is often only detected when half of kidney function has already been lost. He writes ICT and health.
This method of detecting kidney disease uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to get a detailed view of the retina at the back of the eye. This allows important changes in the eye to be observed, which indicate the presence and progression of kidney disease. The study showed that patients with kidney disease had thinner retinas than people in the control group.
