The European Commission has sent a request for information to several major platforms, including Google Search, TikTok and Instagram. The Commission wants to know how it addresses the risks posed by generative AI, such as fake images and disinformation.
The applications were made under the Digital Services Act. Requests sent to Bing, Facebook, Google Search, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Writes the European Commission on Thursday. The committee asks platforms what they are doing to prevent the spread of deepfakes, for example.
The Commission also requests “internal information and documentation on risk assessments and risk mitigation measures regarding the impact of generative artificial intelligence, among other things, on electoral processes.” The European Commission adds that this relates to the creation and distribution of content generated by artificial intelligence.
Moreover, the committee plans to conduct a series of stress tests after Easter. These should demonstrate how well platforms are preparing for flows of disinformation, for example ahead of the European Parliament elections in June. Concerned companies must submit the required information to the committee by April 5. This is necessary to prepare questions about preventing misinformation surrounding elections.
