music“Farewell to a Friend” by Clouzot and “Een Ster” by Stan van Samang are the songs often chosen for the funeral of a loved one in Flanders. Songs from our northern neighbors also scored well in the top 10 of Dutch funeral music, according to a poll by funeral specialist DELA.
Nearly 8 in 10 Belgians find personal elements such as music important at a funeral. However, it is not easy to choose from an enormous repertoire of artists after the loss of a loved one. That's why DELA has made the “final list” this year. At the end of 2023, they searched for the most popular funeral music and compiled these songs into the top 150 songs. “These lists serve as an inspiration to ease the worries of organizing a funeral for Belgians,” says Marisia, the organization's spokeswoman.
In addition to “Star” and “Farewell to a Friend,” Anne Christie's “The Rose” completes the top three. But Romeo's “Kaarsje in mijn hart” also got a place in the top 10 list. These are the ten most played songs in Dutch at a funeral.
At funerals in our country, not only Dutch songs are played. English language music and French classical music often provide comfort. The top three in foreign music include Frank Sinatra's “My Way,” Sarah Brightman's “Time to Say Goodbye,” and Eric Clapton's “Tears in the Sky.”
