The atmosphere is good in Middenvijver on the left bank. The hip-hop festival “Fire is Gold” will be held there again today. The headline is Damseau, the most streamed Belgian artist at the moment. But throughout the day, a group with resounding names like Frenna, Miss Angel and Broederliefde draw festival-goers from outside Antwerp to the Scheldt’s Left Bank to dance under the welcome summer sun.

Fire is Gold is the nation’s largest urban and R&B festival and the first major event for over-16s without the hassle of masks or social distancing. The first edition of Fire is Gold was held in Vilford, after which the party moved to Antwerp. The last edition in 2019 attracted more than 10,000 visitors. This version promises a better job.

“We couldn’t have wished for a better day,” said organizer Wim van der Burght, who watches the audience backstage on the main stage as Bizzey pulls out the big party pistols with a “Slow” hit. Van der Burght expects the festival to reach 12,000 visitors, 20% of whom are from the Netherlands, because the festival season is still in the background. “This is the festival of the new generation,” the organizer insists. “Fire is Gold attracts a very small and diverse audience.” And this audience has brought out the most glamorous and fashionable festival outfits to enjoy what they have been missing for so long until midnight. “We have been looking forward to this a lot,” we were called out from all sides.
