Next year, five highway parking lots will be equipped with truck charging infrastructure. In the future, the Roads and Traffic Authority (AWV) will always have to provide truck charging infrastructure for highway parking concessions. Flemish Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters (Open VLD) answered this in the Mobility Committee to a question from Vlaams Belang MP Wim Verheyden.
In order to confront climate-related challenges and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Flemish Transport Minister Lydia Peeters wants to make transportation greener. This concerns not only passenger transportation, but also freight transportation. Regarding transportation, according to the Open VLD Minister, there is not only a need to switch to water and railways, but also greening, for example, by switching to electric cars.
The Minister is taking various steps to support this greening. For example, today it announced that five motorway parking lots will be equipped with truck charging infrastructure in 2024. This concerns Beauti (in both directions), Postel (in both directions) and Wallshotem (in the direction of Brussels). Additionally, all future AWV franchise agreements will impose a requirement on franchisees to provide truck charging infrastructure.
In addition, a tender was launched to prepare a long-term strategy for greening freight transport. One of the goals of this study is to map the shipping locations and shipping needs of the delivery fleet and trucks. According to the minister, there are five candidates to conduct the study. The intention is to grant that study soon.
