Where yesterday’s floods occurred mainly in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg, the waters of the Meuse are now at a higher level more in the center and north. Particularly in the cities of Roermond and further downstream in Venlo, it remains to be seen whether the levees will last.
Everything is now on board in the fight against flooding, NOS reports. According to the latest reports, the rise in the water level could last longer than expected. Dutch authorities no longer speak of a “high water summit” but rather of a “high-watered plateau”. This is not good news, because in this way the dams can become saturated.
at Roermond Thousands of residents were evacuated on Thursday and Friday, and are still unable to return to their homes. The Dutch army started raising Masdijk yesterday. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited the city last night. A commercial complex was also evacuated today.
The images show that a large part of the city is still under water. The Maas waters are now at their highest and that could certainly continue into Sunday morning. To prevent low-lying areas from being flooded, many roads were closed with sandbags.
