The Revolutionary Movement Party was forced to reconsider its lists after European Council President Charles Michel, who ranked first on the European list, withdrew his candidacy for membership in the European Parliament. European Commissioner Didier Reynders also thanked him for including him on the list.
Sophie Wilmès, who was initially going to draw the parliamentary list in Brussels, now moves to the European list. “Everyone made a personal choice and a team choice” after Michel withdrew, Wilmes said on Saturday.
She stressed that her candidacy is “not a departure from Europe,” as events in recent years have shown that European issues have an impact on daily life, such as the farmer protests in recent weeks.
Galatini, whose name has also been mentioned in the European list, says he made the selection and confirms Wilmes' “legitimacy” as party leader. “I've always been interested in federal affairs,” says the Brussels native.
The party also announced the newcomer on Saturday. Pierre Gadol, former rector of Saint Louis University and vice-rector of the University of California at Louvain, is the first successor on the federal list in Brussels.
MR was late in announcing the leaders of the two parties. “It makes sense for a major political party to take two or three weeks to make the best choices and make sure everyone is on the same page when it faces changes in its electoral lineup,” Bouchez responded on Saturday.
