Weather NewsGreece is exposed to a cold wave accompanied by snowfall. A large part of the country, even the island of Crete, is covered with a white coating. Temperatures of -14 degrees were recorded, which is a very exceptional case for the southern European country, which led to power outages and traffic problems.
Snow fell for the first time this winter in central Athens, forcing the Greek parliament and schools to continue to close.
At Athens airport, a series of flights have already been canceled due to severe weather conditions. The metro stations leading to the capital’s airport were disrupted.
Costas Lagovardos, director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, told ANT1 television that the capital had not experienced such weather conditions since 1968.
Snow even fell on several Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, isolated some mountain villages of Andros, Naxos and Tinos and covered the shores of Mykonos with snow.
The island of Evia, north of Athens, already ravaged by fires this summer, also suffered heavy snowfall.
Snow and negative temperatures are expected to continue through Tuesday.
