Nicole and Hugo are icons of Flemish showbiz. In 1973 they represented Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest, where they last finished with the song Baby, Baby. It was only natural that they had been involved a couple of years ago with “Goeiemorgen, Morgen”.
Hugo recalls in the story of their engagement in 1971. “On the Friday before we left for Ireland, we recorded a trailer for our song on a ferry in Ostend.” “There Nicole developed jaundice. We thought for a moment to let me leave and receive Nicole. But her professor in Leuven responded very briefly. He said“ So you’d better take a coffin with you. ”Then we knew we could forget our participation.
“I assure that we ourselves, by dancing, scored better.”
They were quickly replaced by Jack Raymond and Lily Castell. They ranked 14th that year. However, they performed too loudly, Hugo says. “The big mistake was that the announcer wanted to see Nicole and Hugo Thani on stage, including the dance moves.”
“But Jack wasn’t a dancer at all, and what he had to do on stage just wasn’t good with him,” Hugo looks back. “Fifty years later, we still have a lot of respect for what they did in Dublin. But I absolutely insist that we ourselves, with our little dance, scored better.”
