With the arrival of the Conference League, more teams will have the opportunity to show themselves on the European stage, but it has made the group stage more complicated. Where do you end up as a club if you finish second in the Europa League and what is the advantage of becoming a group winner? Overview.
1. Champions League
Nothing has changed in the Champions League system:
- Numbers 1 and 2 from each group will advance to the 1/8 . Finals
- The winner of the group is the seed in the lottery
- The number 3 qualifies for the play-offs (eg 1/16 finals) of the Europa League
- The European adventure for the number 4 is over
2. European League
In contrast to previous years, there are 3 teams that participate in the winter season in each group of the European League:
- The winner of the group goes directly to the 1/8 finals of the Europa League (thereby skipping the playoffs)
- The No. 2 qualifies for the playoffs in the European League (1/16 finals) and will face the No. 3 in the Champions League
- The number 3 qualifies for the conference league qualifiers (1/16 finals) and will face the number 2 of the conference league
- Number 4 is closed
3. League Conference
The Conference League is a new league. Unlike the Champions League and Europa League, only the top 2 get here
- The group winner can advance directly to the 1/8 finals of a conference league
- No. 2 plays a playoff (1/16 final) against No. 3 of the Europa League
- The story ends for numbers 3 and 4
