Morocco is groaning under a continuous heat wave. This week, temperatures rose to 48 degrees, making this the third heat wave this month. But why is it so hot in Morocco?
According to the Moroccan Meteorological Directorate, there are several reasons. The most important is global climate change. “This is causing temperatures to rise and extreme weather to become more frequent,” said the DGM. “Morocco is located in the Mediterranean, a hotspot for climate change, and is therefore more vulnerable.”

Hot air coming from the Sahara also plays a role. “It can flow towards Morocco and cause phenomena such as Chergui or Sirocco, hot winds from the southeast,” explains the DGM.
The third factor is the “heat island effect” in cities. “Cities become warmer than the surrounding countryside because of buildings and asphalt,” the DGM said.

This extreme heat can have serious consequences for human health and the environment. To limit the increase in heat waves, the DGM calls for global action on climate change and sustainable urban planning.
