NASA, apparently for fun, decided it would be fun to give Venus a taste of hip-hop. The space agency beamed Missy Elliott’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” to the inhospitable planet, marking the first time hip-hop music has been broadcast into space, and only the second time the powerful Deep Space Network (DSN) has been used to beam music into the cosmos.
Become Tell us The song traveled 98 million miles to the second planet in our solar system, all in 14 minutes thanks to traveling at the speed of light. The broadcast was sent from the 34-meter-wide radio dish antenna of the Deep Space Station 13 in California, also known as Venus.
Speaking about the decision to send Elliott’s music to the stars, Brittany Brown, director of the Digital Technology Division in NASA’s Office of Communications, said: “Both space exploration and Missy Elliott’s art were about pushing boundaries. Missy has a proven track record of incorporating space-focused storytelling and futuristic imagery into her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something extraterrestrial was a real fit.”
