Dedryck Boyata has become a huge hurdle at Club Brugge. The former Red Devil was brought in with a lot of expectations, but it quickly turned out that the purchase was a bad one. Too expensive, considering his huge salary.
The 33-year-old Boyata still has one year left on his contract, but due to his high salary of almost three million euros per year, Club Brugge wants to get rid of him at any cost, as written by HLN Today, Boyata is now the fifth-choice defender, and his wages are having a huge impact on the budget, while Klopp was already working to reduce wage costs.
Boyata’s high wages are the main reason he continues to play at Club Brugge. No Belgian club can or wants to receive his salary, even partially, and there has been little interest from abroad.
Club Brugge are hoping to find a solution in exotic competitions where transfer windows are open longer, such as in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the club are trying to persuade Boyata to hand over part of his salary, but are understandably reluctant to do so.
After all, Boyata is in a good place at the club. He has a good relationship with his teammates and is committed to the club. He helps the younger players. Although Boyata’s attitude and professionalism are appreciated within the club, the decision to get rid of him is a business consideration for Club Brugge.
Boyata’s failed adventure at Club Brugge proved to be a costly mistake. He played just 26 games in two years, mostly as a substitute, and was on the pitch for just 1,063 minutes. At a cost of €230,000 per game, it is not possible for the club to keep him on the payroll for another season.
