Directly across from Antwerp Central Station, in the former Century Centre, a new branch of Dutch department store chain Albert Heijn opened this morning. Franchisee Gianni Dimes – a well-known face in the area – is behind the new store with a team of 40 people. “I know the neighborhood well and I know a lot of people here.”
The opening of the new Albert Heijn branch – official name: “Albert Heijn Antwerp Central” – attracted dozens of onlookers this morning. At 10 a.m., people were allowed inside virtually, after concessionaire Gianni Dimes and his family cut the opening ribbon.
“I was the manager of the newspaper shop ‘Dagbreydel’ in the central station,” says Gianni Dimes. “So I know the neighborhood well and I know a lot of people here. The station area is full of potential and opening a store in this location was at the top of my wish list. I have been an Albert Heijn franchisee for a few years now. “Albert Heijn Antwerp Central” is our fourth location. We are incredibly looking forward to creating a fantastic store here.”
After KFC, Albert Heijn Antwerp Central is the first store to open its doors in the new Pelican Shopping Centre, the former Century Centre. The new supermarket, which is open daily, has an entrance on Pelikaanstraat and at Diamant metro station and is also accessible by subway from the metro.
