A snowstorm hit the area around Washington, D.C., on Monday. After a period of particularly mild temperatures, part of the East Coast of the United States is now rocked by a winter storm that has already caused a great deal of disruption. Hundreds of thousands of Americans were without power in several states on the East Coast on Monday.
In addition to strong storms passing over the area, there is also a lot of snow. For example, there is already an eighteen centimeter layer of snow, but according to the US Weather Services, this may rise to 25 centimeters. Previously, federal officials and government employees were told on Sunday not to come to work on Monday.
Government services and schools have been closed, and coronavirus testing centers have also had to close their doors. In addition, public and air transport has been severely disrupted, with thousands of flights canceled and delayed. There were no cars in town. Neighboring Virginia and Maryland were also affected by the snowstorm. In Virginia, 37 cm of snow fell, and in Maryland, more than 39 cm. Also in Tennessee (about 23 cm) a large amount fell.
In Virginia, 400,000 people were without power Monday night, according to the Dominion Power Corporation. In certain areas, it may take “several days” to restore power. The power supplier said that because of the heavy, wet snow, trees fell and branches fell off.
Many families in Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina were without power on Monday, according to news site The Hill. More than 750,000 people were without power in all affected states, according to the PowerOutage.US website, which reports the blackout.
President Joe Biden also suffered from the winter weather. He was delayed on the return flight from his home state of Delaware. The plane had to wait half an hour before it could land at the military airport, and the car trip to the White House was also very slow.
