Imec wants more space in Leuven, and expects strong growth until 2035

Belgian chip research center imec from Leuven expects it will hire approximately 1,950 new employees by 2035. The workforce growth is part of a comprehensive plan to expand the research center.

Imec expects to be able to significantly expand its chip research initiatives in the coming years. Write de find. It is hoped that this will be achieved, among other things, through recent support of €750 million from the European Union and a similar amount from the Flemish Government.

The amount provided by the Flemish government is intended for the construction of a new clean room. Dutch company ASML will provide high quality chip production machines for this cleanroom free of charge.

The Chip Research Center is currently the only research institute in the world that develops and manufactures chips with a sub-nanometer process.

More staff are needed

These developments in turn mean that a much larger number of employees will be needed. Imec therefore expects that approximately 1,950 new employees will be added by 2035. The Belgian chip research center currently has approximately five thousand employees, of which approximately four thousand are at the site in Leuven.

New employees to be recruited at imec should be in all positions, from operators and technicians to researchers in physics and chemistry and doctoral students. Cooperation with universities must also be strengthened.

Part of the European chip law

The workforce expansion is partly a result of the EU chip law, through which the EU wants to become less dependent on other countries and regions for chip production. Thus, chip production in the EU should double by 2030.

advice: These are the European chip production plans

Imec, in cooperation with the French research institute Leti and the German Fraunhofer Institute, wants to pursue this and make the Leuven region the beating heart of European chip production.

Master plan

Therefore, the Chip Research Center has developed a comprehensive plan, of which the desired expansion of the number of employees is part. Imec is also planning to expand the site in Leuven and is now discussing this with local residents.
