ING launches Google Pay support for customers with Android smartphones. Users can activate the function via the ING Banking app. Currently, only smartphones are supported; An update for smartwatches will be released later.
Private customers can now store ING debit and credit cards in their Google Wallet and use them to make contactless payments. Business customers can only link a debit card. For amounts up to €50, the smartphone can be held in front of a contactless payment terminal; The screen only needs to be turned on for this. This can be done up to three times a day or a maximum of €100. Unlocking is required for subsequent payments or amounts over €50, Gee said. The job is available in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
Google Pay, like other contactless payment services, uses the NFC chip in smartphones. Therefore, a smartphone with this chip and at least Android 8 operating system is required. The bank told Tweakers that it will also launch Google Pay support on smartwatches “in the short term.” The bank recently released an update to the Garmin Pay app. This service already works on select smartwatches.
Google Pay has been available in the Netherlands since the end of 2020, with banks able to add the service outside of the Pay app to their own apps. Google Pay supports not only debit and credit cards, but also tickets and loyalty cards, for example. This service is already offered by ABN AMRO, Bunq and Rabobank, among others.
