Russia has expressed dissatisfaction with the German investigation into the 2022 explosions that ruptured the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The country believes the German investigation will be closed without identifying those responsible for the sabotage. Oleg Tyapkin, head of the European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Moscow had raised the issue of Germany’s obligation to fulfill its obligations under UN anti-terrorism treaties.
Russia has made formal requests to Berlin regarding the case, citing a lack of transparency in the investigation. The country wants answers from Germany about who was responsible for the attack. Meanwhile, German media reported that German prosecutors have identified a Ukrainian diving instructor as a suspect and issued an arrest warrant for him in Poland. But the suspect has escaped arrest because Germany has not included his name in its wanted persons database.
Suspects in the vandalism remain at large.
Polish prosecutors confirmed they had received the German arrest warrant, but were unable to detain the suspect because he had already left the country. The Russian Foreign Ministry is demanding answers from Germany about who was responsible for the sabotage, citing a lack of transparency in the investigation.
Nord Stream Pipelines Under the Microscope
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carry gas under the Baltic Sea, were ruptured by a series of explosions in September 2022. The incident came seven months after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. No one has claimed responsibility for the explosions, and Russia has repeatedly accused the United States and Britain of being behind the attack.
Russia is now demanding answers from Germany. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged Germany to consider the devastating consequences of the sabotage, including for the German economy.
Russia’s point of view
Lavrov stressed that Russia is not trying to divert attention from the real perpetrators, but rather to emphasize the need for accountability. He believes the attack was an “act of terrorism” and that Germany must take responsibility for allowing it. Lavrov also expressed concern about the long-term consequences of the sabotage for Germany’s energy security.
Without providing evidence, Lavrov claimed that Washington ultimately ordered the pipelines to be blown up. The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal have all done so. I mentioned And that Ukraine was behind the attack, but Russia has repeatedly denied this claim.
