‘It was scary’: Deer crossing causes crash on Vuelta stage 8

Misjudging a turn, or tapping your teammate’s rear wheel… collisions can happen easily in a cycling race. But the collision between Giulio Ciccone and Txumin Juaresti in the Vuelta had a very striking cause: deer crossing the road.

16 kilometres from the finish, a herd of deer caused chaos on stage 8 of the Vuelta yesterday.

Txomin Juaristi and Giulio Ciccone were knocked to the ground by a deer. Another animal got stuck between the bikes of the Euskaltel-Euskadi support vehicle.

“While the doctor was treating Txommen, a deer jumped onto the bike rack on the roof of our team’s truck and damaged two bikes,” the Basque team said.

“It was scary, but luckily Texumen wasn’t hurt. He had some scratches on his back and a cut on his lower back.”

Primoz Roglic was unfazed by the troublemakers. The Slovenian won the second stage of the Vuelta and made up time on leader Ben O’Connor.
