Ivan de Wit brought KAA Gent out of the doldrums and into the club it is today. After this season, he will step down as club president.
Sam Barrow took over KAA Gent last year. He has retained the team’s most important board members for another season, but from next season he will take full control.
It also means saying goodbye to club president Ivan de Wit, who helped make the club great. In an interview with club magazine WigWam, De Witte spoke about many things about his experience at Buffalos.
This also reveals his biggest mistake as president. “We should not have fired Jess Thorup. Then came the appointment of Laszlo Poloni, who is a good coach, but not for this club. It was absolutely the wrong choice.”
Setting things right
“Then Wim De Decker was appointed, who, with all due respect, did not have the quality of T1 in the Belgian top at that time. Those were three disastrous months, the fall of 2020.”
The solution was clear to Witt. “Then we asked Hine to put things right, and he did. Ultimately, that period of bad decisions didn’t last long, but it stayed with the people.
