Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been sent back to prison. A Pretoria court ruled on Wednesday that his release on medical grounds was unlawful.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced to 15 months in prison in early July for contempt of justice. He refused to testify in a corruption investigation. However, as a result of his hospitalization, the relevant Department of Justice decided on September 5 to grant him conditional release on medical grounds.
The court now says the official did not follow the correct procedure. For example, he failed to consult a group of medical experts.
Zuma is accused of corruption during his presidency (2009-2018). He is also accused of fraud, corruption and racketeering in an arms deal he signed as Vice President in 1999. Zuma denies the allegations.
The arrest of Zuma lit the fuse in South Africa. Zuma attempted to frame his persecution as a form of apartheid policy. His fans took to the streets And left behind a trail of destruction. More than 100 people were killed in the riots.
