Key moment: In the 68th minute, Vanhisbrouck makes a double substitution. Tisodali and Hong were on the pitch for exactly one minute when they and Jerkins put together a smart attack that led to Orbán’s 3-2 win.
Man of the match: Gift Orban beat Ghent by three and were logically allowed to take the match ball. The Nigerian striker finally looks to be the killer of last season and is once again making a serious claim for a starting spot in the coming weeks.
distinct: For the fifth match in a row, Ghent scores at least 3 goals. Out of those five matches, they only kept one clean sheet. So the scene is guaranteed in Buffalo.
The bitter Icelandic cold gave Hein Vanhaezebrouck too many headaches for the party. Will the mat be playable and can Gent easily distance themselves from Breidablik, who on paper were far inferior, in difficult circumstances?
It quickly looked like unjustified worry, because just 6 minutes later, Gift Emmanuel Orban headed the Buffaloes in front. On cruise control once again toward a big, simple victory?
Nothing could be further from the truth. In two crazy minutes, Gent gave up their entire lead before half-time. Svanthorsson took advantage of the weak defense twice and created a dream for the Icelanders.
Gent wanted it, but did absolutely nothing in the first half. So step in, Vanhaysbrouck thought. Coomes remained in the dressing room, and Julien de Sart came between the lines as captain and had to steer the Genesty ship in the right direction once again.
A golden change, because less than 10 minutes into the second half, De Sart sent an excellent free kick towards the far post. Cuypers appears to be able to score, but is fouled. The next punishment is a piece of cake for Orban.
But Vanhaysbrouck has more rabbits in his hat. In the 68th minute, Tisodale and Hong entered the field and less than a minute later the score was 2-3 on the scoreboard.
Hong sets up the attack, Jerkens delivers a brilliant through ball and Tisodali provides the assist for Urban’s third goal.
Finally Ghent took the lead again. Despite a very poor fourth quarter and few chances for Breidablik, they did not let up. Literally and figuratively, an evening of shivering in the Icelandic cold.
