Poor health condition
“The King is receiving good care from the Malaysian and Norwegian medical staff,” the statement said. The court did not share any further details about what exactly is happening with the king. Earlier this month he had to take it easier due to a respiratory infection. Then his son, Crown Prince Haakon, assumed his duties. Therefore, Harald often suffers from respiratory infections. In November, he was briefly on sick leave due to a cold, while in August he was hospitalized due to an infection. After treatment with antibiotics, the king was allowed to leave the hospital after three days.
King Harald's health has deteriorated sharply in recent years. In 2020 he underwent surgery on his heart and shortly afterwards also on his knee. In 2021, he was unable to attend the last-minute official visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima to Norway. The program was hastily changed due to his deteriorating health. Then his son took over his duties.
The oldest king in Europe
Harald has now been King of Norway for 33 years and has no intention of abdicating. He said firmly: “I stick to what I have always said: I took an oath before Parliament and it lasts for life.” Then a journalist asked him if he was affected by the radical decision of his Danish colleague Margaret, saying: “I will continue.” “To the bitter end,” he said immediately. “There is truth in the slogan ‘The king is dead, long live the king,’” he wrote in a book a few years ago. Harald recently turned 87, making him the oldest monarch in Europe.
