Argentina did not miss its date with football history. In the special final of the Copa America in Miami, striker Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal against Colombia (1-0). Lionel Messi’s team is the first American country to win three major tournaments in a row. The only sporting flaw: the grandmaster had to leave injured after an hour.
The 48th edition of the Copa America will be an unforgettable one. Not in sporting terms, but certainly not because of what happened off the pitch.
Before the game, chaos erupted at the entrances to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Security forces were unable to bring fans – with or without valid tickets – into the stadium in a peaceful manner.
Consequences: Stunning images and a starting whistle that was delayed by an hour and a half.
In that final, Shakira’s long performance at half-time and Lionel Messi’s substitution were the moments that stayed with the fans.
The Argentina captain had to leave the pitch after an hour with an ankle injury. Even the experienced world champion couldn’t hold back the tears of disappointment.
But after midnight (in Miami) they gave way to tears of joy. In extra time, top scorer Lautaro Martinez – who has scored 5 goals in the United States – scored the liberation goal against Colombia 1-0.
Argentina celebrates a unique treble: they defend their Copa America title and win the World Cup in Qatar. No country in the Americas has done that before Lionel Scaloni’s team.
The Argentines can now also call themselves record holders with 15 final victories.
Messi had to leave in tears.
But he was later allowed to lift the cup.
