Some unmanned gas stations in New Zealand were temporarily closed on Thursday due to Leap Day. Cash register software cannot handle leap years.
Road users in New Zealand got a surprise when they tried to fill up on fuel on Thursday morning. A motorcyclist told a public radio station RNZ He tried to fill up at four gas stations in the morning, but they were all down. A truck driver arrives at a gas station and sees six trucks parked there.
The problem occurred at unmanned gas stations across the country. Due to this, the road users suffered due to not being able to refuel at the petrol stations of various companies. Gas stations with people loaded were not affected by the outage.
The cause of the problem turned out to be the software used by all the companies. The software company was quick to point out that the bug was related to Leap Day. Software is not scheduled to deal with February 29.
The company immediately began modifying the software. At around 7 a.m. (local time), oil companies confirmed that the problem had been resolved and that refueling at unmanned gas stations could resume.
