Van Eetvelt will have to rest for an additional week after the operation, after which he can carefully start training again. But it is expected to take at least five weeks before he can return to racing. The Tour of Hungary is therefore not an option, but the Tour of Switzerland (9-16 June), which was already on its original programme, still looks possible. Van Eetvelt also has the Vuelta a España on his program later this season.

Early spring was going great for Van Eetvelt. He won in Mallorca in January, was best at the UAE Tour in February and finished 11th in Strade Bianche at the start of March. However, his knee started to bother him, meaning he had to cancel the Tour of Catalunya. Then, it also turns out that the Ardennes classics came too soon. He had to cancel the Brabantse Beagle, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Now the Tour of Hungary has also been dropped from his programme.
