There are women who use herbal remedies to improve fertility when they want to get pregnant, to prevent miscarriage during pregnancy, or to increase milk production while breastfeeding. In the Larb’s Mothers of Tomorrow survey, women also appeared to use herbal remedies for these reasons.
Herbs are gaining popularity for treating various ailments surrounding pregnancy, postpartum and during breastfeeding. The natural ingredients of herbal remedies are often thought to pose a lower risk of side effects than regular medications. But there is little scientific knowledge about the safety of these medications during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. Also, the ingredients of herbal remedies are not always checked and may interact with medications. Therefore, they can definitely pose a health risk.
Mothers of Tomorrow Larp
Tomorrow’s Mothers LARB uses questionnaires to collect data on medication use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. These surveys show that most herbal remedies used during pregnancy can be divided into two groups: treatments to improve fertility or prevent miscarriage and treatments to increase milk production.
