An underwater volcano has erupted on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, creating a new island off the coast of the uninhabited island. The red hot magma comes into contact with seawater, causing explosions due to the temperature difference. This also creates thick smoke. The volcanic ash and rocks created create a new island. Aerial photos clearly show how the island is developing off the coast of Iwo Jima. However, it is likely that the island is only a temporary phenomenon, as the material from which the island is made is usually not resistant to seawater.
