Keyless entry transmits a code or series of codes that are picked up by the vehicle’s antennas. However, this code can also be captured by a scanning device and sent to a booster unit that repeats the code next to the car door to unlock it. Because the car thinks it is the owner who wants access, the car’s other safety systems, such as the alarm and immobilizer, are not activated when the car is unlocked.
British police are investigating the theft, but to no avail so far. The car has not yet been found and the perpetrators are still missing. According to the Daily Mail, stolen cars are often immediately placed on shipping containers to block tracking systems. Therefore, there is little chance that the owner will see his Rolls-Royce again.
Tips against keyless theft
There are of course a number of ways to give thieves the lowest possible chance of stealing your car via this system. For example, park your car in a safe place, such as a locked garage or secure parking lot. Also place your switch as far away from the street as possible, so thieves can’t steal the signal. Usually the keys reach a distance of five to six meters, if they are far from your car, you are safe. Perhaps the best advice: put the key in a metal box. After all, this is a so-called Faraday cage, which means thieves can’t access the signal.
