Video footage spread on social media showed how a number of people first smashed the car's windows and then set off fireworks in the robot taxi, after which it burned completely. The incident occurred in Chinatown, where many people were celebrating Chinese New Year. There were no people on board the taxi and no one was hurt.
Self-driving cars are increasingly under fire in San Francisco. Firefighters complain, among other things, that they often block traffic. In addition, Uber drivers fear losing their jobs.
Since the summer, vehicles from Waymo and rival Cruise have been allowed to provide 24-hour taxi services in San Francisco. However, the cruise cars have remained idle since October, after a pedestrian was dragged several meters by a robotaxi. Proponents still believe that self-driving cars are safer than cars driven by humans.
