Luca Brecel scores a thrilling Tour Championship win in Wales: “Belgian Bullet” beat England’s best player Judd Trump in the tournament with the best 8 players of the season. “It shows how good I am at playing this season,” Prissell laughs.
In December, Brecel lost the UK Championship final, but won the Scottish Open a week later. His good performance from July so far has earned him a ticket to the penultimate ranking event with a top 8 of the season.
In 2017, Priscill Judd Trump, world number 3 and 2019 World Champion, already won an Invitational Tournament, but yesterday it was the first time in the Ranking Tournament. Pressel ran 7-2, Trump back 8-6, but our compatriot stayed cool: 10-6. It’s 8-2 in mutual duels.
“I am very proud,” Prissil said. “Winning one game here feels like winning a treble in another tournament. Being able to beat such an outstanding player in a long game shows how well I’ve played this season.”
“My mix is good. I have confidence and I am patient. This is essential for long matches. I see this tournament as a test for the World Cup (which will take place in mid-April, editor), so winning is a bonus. I hope to continue that for as long as possible.”
In today’s semi-final, Ronnie O’Sullivan will face Neil Robertson, a remake of last year’s final, which Robertson won.
Tomorrow Brecel will face John Higgins, who defeated the Scotsman in the Scottish Open final. “It’s going to be very difficult, John is a very good player. I’m going to have to play better than today because Judd missed a little bit more than usual. I’m going to have to level up a little bit.”
