Barendrecht – Professor Dr. Martin van den Bent has been appointed Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands. The award was presented on behalf of the King by the Mayor of Barendrecht Ronald Schneider. The presentation was made during the “Farewell Symposium” in honor of Mr. van den Bent’s retirement at the Rotterdam Kunsthal.

Martin van den Bent’s scholarly works are extensive and of high quality. Due to his exceptional achievements in the field of neuro-oncology: at national, European and global levels, de Kooning decided to appoint him a Knight of the Dutch Order of the Lion.

It is not usual for the mayor of Barendrecht to carry out an official role in another municipality. This only happens on exceptional occasions when a resident of Barendrecht is honored for his or her special services to the community.

As one of the leading Erasmus MC researchers, Martin van den Bent is among the absolute world leaders in his field. He is the initiator of several clinical studies on brain tumor patients. In cooperation with international partners, he prepared and conducted studies all over the world. Preparing, coordinating and implementing such large international studies is very complex. Many of these studies have been published in prestigious medical scientific journals. Martin van den Bent has more than 490 highly cited scientific publications to his name.

These studies have improved outcomes for patients with brain tumors around the world. His scientific work has had an impact around the world and on many thousands of patients whose lives have become longer and/or of better quality. Mr. van den Bent works closely with his patients and is very friendly. Due to his tremendous clinical experience, knowledge and attitude, he is an example to many training professionals.

Brain Tumor Day

Martin van den Bent was the initiator of the Public Brain Tumor Day which he created in collaboration with the Brain Tumor Foundation in 2011 and which has been held annually since then. In addition, he holds and holds various board positions in international organizations in the field of neuro-oncology, specializing in brain tumors.

Due to his many achievements, Mr. Van den Bent has received numerous national and international awards in recent years.
