Meta is appealing to a court in Luxembourg against the appointment of Facebook Messenger and Facebook Marketplace as gatekeepers. Strict rules will apply from next year under Digital Markets Act legislation.
Meta will argue that Facebook Messenger is just a chat function within Facebook and not a separate service, Financial Times reports. That’s a tough argument for the company, which removed Messenger from the Facebook app years ago and integrated it into its own company. As for Marketplace, Meta will argue that it is not a service through which businesses engage consumers, which is necessary to fall under the DMA.
The company said in a statement that it just wanted to clarify the nuances of the law and that the company continues to prepare for the DMA. In addition, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram says it wants to adhere to the new rules. These will come into effect in March next year.
Meta is the first company to oppose its appointment as a gatekeeper. Microsoft and Google decided not to do so. Tweakers previously wrote a backstory on DMA.
