Microsoft is removing mixed reality from Windows

Windows Mixed Reality and its associated applications will no longer be part of future Windows releases.

Microsoft has added new apps to its list of scary apps Unsupported features He added. The most eye-catching new name is Windows Mixed Reality, a software platform that supports mixed reality apps under Windows 10 and 11. Therefore, apps like Mixed Reality Portal and SteamVR will also be removed from Windows. This will happen with future versions.

Mixed reality in Windows

Windows Mixed Reality was created in 2017 to make its mark in the world of virtual reality. At the time, HTC’s headset and Oculus (now renamed Meta Quest), among other companies, generated renewed enthusiasm for the technology because you could easily turn your living room into a 3D virtual world. Microsoft wanted to go a step further and integrate the virtual world into the physical world. Through the mixed reality platform, Microsoft hoped to reach virtual reality device manufacturers to develop specialized devices.

The platform never took off, in part because mixed reality remains a niche technology to this day. The Metaverse-led hype has also not been able to do much to change this. So it seems that Microsoft does not see any future for mixed reality applications within Windows. Apple will soon launch Vision Pro glasses early next year.

HoloLens

In a business context, Microsoft hasn’t completely given up on VR. The software giant will continue to support HoloLens. The glasses don’t work on Windows Mixed Reality, but rather on Windows Holographic. Microsoft HoloLens’ most famous customer is the US Army, which uses the glasses to train soldiers in combat situations. Microsoft is also still trying to launch its own Mesh platform for 3D meetings.
