Microsoft has released a preview version of its DirectSR API. This API makes it easier for developers to implement support for various upscaling technologies in their games, such as AMD FSR, Nvidia DLSS, and Intel XeSS.
Microsoft confirms in a blog post that DirectSR will be available from now on Available in preview For developers. The API is available through the DirectX 12 Agility SDK, specifically in Preview version 1.714.0. The preview has built-in support for AMD FidelityFX Supersolution 2.2, while XeSS and DLSS are supported at the driver level. This means that users with an Intel GPU must install the latest drivers to use XeSS over DirectSR. Nvidia users must be running driver version 560.38 or later to support DLSS over DirectSR.
The DirectSR API was announced earlier this year at GDC 2024. Microsoft is working with GPU makers AMD, Intel, and Nvidia to create a standardized way to implement ultra-resolution upscaling techniques in games. This way, developers only need to add support for a single API to their games to support all common upgrading techniques. This includes at least AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and Nvidia DLSS.
Currently, game developers have to put different upgrade technologies into their games separately, which requires additional development time. DirectSR does not change the basic operation of various upscalers.
