Abbas wants to “re-evaluate” relations with the Americans, and Israel summons its ambassadors

The US veto in the UN Security Council a few days ago is still echoing. The Americans prevented the Palestinians from joining the United Nations as “full members.” The Palestinian Territories currently still have “observer” status. The United States indicated that the solution to the conflict must come through “direct negotiations between all parties.”

The veto caused disappointment among the Palestinians. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he would “reevaluate” relations with the United States. His Palestinian Authority de facto governs the Palestinian territories. Abbas said: “We must protect the interests of our people, our cause and our rights.”

But the possibility that Abbas will cut ties with America is slim. The Palestinian Authority relies heavily on American financial aid. In addition, Abbas – who is now 88 years old – is criticized for the “helplessness” of the Palestinians in confronting Israel.

Israel responded with relief about the vote. Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz said, “Terrorism will not be rewarded.” However, the country is upset that 12 members of the United Nations Security Council voted in favor of Palestine's accession. France, Japan and Ecuador, among others, have given the green light. Today, Israel will summon the ambassadors of all yes voters.
