The US space agency NASA is holding a press conference Tuesday evening at 7 pm (Belgium time) to present what it calls a “big discovery” of the OSIRIS-REx probe.
From the OSIRIS-REx probe (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, but that could be shorter too) The asteroid Bennu, a space rock about 500 meters wide, has been investigated for the past two years. During that period, the size, shape, mass, composition and course of Bennu were examined, and a sample of the subsoil (about 60 grams of gravel dust) was taken.
The probe left the asteroid again on May 10, and OSIRIS-REx is expected to return to Earth on September 24, 2023. Then the sample taken can be examined. But NASA is already announcing a press conference to announce “important discovery”, announcing a “significant discovery.” It is not yet clear what this discovery means, so we will have to wait until seven o’clock on Wednesday evening.
