The foreign ministers of the 30 NATO countries will hold an emergency video link meeting on Friday on the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border. The meeting will be chaired by Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General. The program includes the reinforcement of Russian forces on the borders and the security guarantees requested by Moscow. This will be followed by a press conference.
The meeting will take place now that consultations with the Russians are planned soon. Negotiators from Moscow and Washington are expected to meet in Geneva in the coming weeks, and another meeting of the NATO-Russia Council is scheduled for January 12, the first in more than two years. Within this council, NATO ambassadors usually meet with a Russian colleague on a regular basis.
Russia wants NATO countries to commit to refraining from military action on the territory of Ukraine and other countries in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. In addition, there is also a direct demand that Ukraine refrain from joining NATO.
Stoltenberg has indicated several times in recent weeks that NATO wants to enter the conversation, but will not allow Russia to dictate who may or may not join NATO.
