The world premiere was announced at the end of 2022 as the ‘Cow Farmer and Sheep Tax’ passed by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. But today New Zealand has again canceled the ‘fur tax’ for farmers NOS.
The original proposal for an emissions tax (Burp tax) pricing of methane and nitrogen emissions and will be introduced from 2025 onwards. New Zealand has a population of 5 million with 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep. Agricultural emissions account for nearly half of national emissions.
This proposal received a lot of criticism. Climate activists thought it was not ambitious enough, while farmers feared for their business operations. The new conservative government initially postponed it, but has now decided to postpone it.
The government is committed to maintaining climate targets without closing New Zealand farms: climate neutral by 2050 and 10% lower methane emissions by 2030.
