The campaign against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua continues. On the night of December 29 to 30, six more priests were arrested. In recent days, a total of eleven priests have been killed and… Bishop Isidoro Mora of Siona Imprisoned by a totalitarian regime.
All the arrested priests belong to the Diocese of Managua. Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora Ortega of Siona was arrested after the prayer Rolando Jose Alvarez Lagos, Bishop of Matagalpa and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Estelí. Alvarez Lagos was sentenced to 26 years in prison without a fair trial, on charges of conspiracy, disseminating false information, obstruction of justice and contempt of authorities. He has been imprisoned since February, after being under house arrest since August 2022.
Deputy United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-NashifHe stated that Nicaragua is increasingly moving away from the rule of law, especially with regard to fundamental freedoms. She noted that this exacerbates people's suffering, fuels youth migration, and undermines the future of democratic institutions. According to Al-Nashif, authorities in Managua continue to persecute political leaders, indigenous people, members of the Catholic Church, activists and journalists. Nicaragua is currently one of the countries where Catholicism is greatly persecuted. (Vatican News)
