DPAThe humanitarian ship Ocean Viking is looking for a safe haven after rescuing 570 migrants in the Mediterranean. This was reported by SOS Mediterranee.
The NGO that operates the ship said that in the past five days, the ship has carried out six rescue missions to rescue migrants at risk at sea. It participated in operations in Maltese and Libyan waters. Nearly 370 people were rescued on a wooden boat during a mission Sunday night.
More than 180 people on board are minors. The crew said the experiences of the past few days had been “shattered”.
The Ocean Viking is currently the only ship operated by a private rescue organization operating in the central Mediterranean. Italian authorities have detained other ships or are preparing for upcoming missions.
The Libyan and Tunisian coast guards also regularly pick up people who encounter problems in the Mediterranean, but are sent back to the country from which they left.
Despite the danger of the crossing, many migrants try to reach Europe via the Mediterranean. Italy said nearly 21,000 people had reached it by sea as of last Friday, compared to 7,300 in the same period last year.
