“I didn't understand it and I never understood why I didn't understand it.” This sentence by Brigitte Kooyman hit me hard. (Deal with that fear of mathematics 13/1). It was also impossible for me to follow the mathematics teacher. In vain I begged my colleagues for an explanation: “But what is X anyway?” The answer will be: “X can be anything.” ' Oh yes? Oh my God, you brat, are you diving into the deep sea? They confirmed this and thus my unity. Their language now consists of a mixture of letters, numbers, and strange signs. Decades later, I understood my aversion. Mathematics was “anti-social.”
Geography was about living, working and transporting. History revealed the motives for the uprisings and the discovery of distant shores and exotic shores. Biology has revealed the secrets of life itself. Modern languages spoke for themselves. That was education: school subjects trying to guide you through the chaos of the world around you. Mathematics was not about people, it was not about meaning, and it was not about the cultural context of human activity in its various forms. The mathematics was about a-squared, p, q and r. Scoring high scores on these brain abstractions was considered a hallmark of true intelligence. Sometimes I fear this still prevails. For me it didn't work with X. In the end Human Subjects saved me.
