Our country is currently receiving only new vaccine deliveries from Pfizer/BioNTech. Dirk Rammakers said this at a briefing for the immunization task force on Saturday. AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson deliveries are halted, and Moderna’s supply has been temporarily suspended.
Ramakers says our country’s vaccination campaign is starting to get saturated. “This is certainly the case in Flanders, and Wallonia is also doing well. In Brussels, additional steps are being taken to strengthen the campaign. We support this as much as possible from the staff. Also in Brussels, we are maintaining the 70 per cent vaccination target.”
The speed of vaccination is no longer related to the speed of delivery, but to the number of people who still want a vaccine. “Since July, the desire to vaccinate has been crucial.”
Pfizer
Right now, Rammakers says, only new deliveries from Pfizer/BioNTech are arriving. “In July we stopped giving the first doses of AstraZeneca. The European contract has expired and has not been extended. So the relationship with AstraZeneca was not clear. Only a few promised deliveries were delivered.”
Johnson & Johnson’s deliveries to our country have also been halted, as this vaccine is being used as much as possible for the COVAX program in developing countries. “Our country is regulating the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine,” says Ramakers.
Belgium still has doses in stock from J&J as well as from Moderna, whose deliveries have been temporarily suspended for heading to COVAX. “We are considering a third dose. We are not worried that we will have too few doses at that time.”
